Helping an industry disrupter make tourism more sustainable

The challenge

Design and deliver an innovation sprint to put sustainability onto the agenda of the whole business, kickstart ideas and raise knowledge and awareness.

What we did

Research showed 87% of people want to travel sustainably. Yet, the tools to help them do so are lacking. As a hyper-growth startup, this presented a huge opportunity for Culture Trip to innovate, differentiate, grow its user base and make positive social and environmental impact at scale.

  • We created the content, facilitated and judged a hackathon with 300 employees in London, New York and Tel Aviv.

  • Teams were tasked with focusing on some of the key areas that are directly impacted by the travel industry, such as livelihoods, climate, biodiversity and water.

  • We rallied the whole company to come up with tangible ideas to make sustainable travel choices easy and attractive to its 20 million users.

Outcomes

Dozens of innovative concepts generated, including;

  • ‘Elec-Trips’ – an Instagram-delivered virtual road-trip which uses technology to take on some of the most iconic stretches of the earth’s roads.

  • ‘Travel Pure’ – an international collaboration of local content creators with expertise in sustainability, tapping into Culture Trip’s unique international creator community. These Sustainability Champions would promote sustainable tourism in their areas so generating economic benefit to their local communities.

“As well as being an incredible day of innovation and team building, the calibre of ideas that came from the hackathon was simply incredible. The pitches clearly demonstrated the care and passion that our employees feel for the cause and we can’t wait to put the ideas into action. We hope this is the first of many such initiatives.”
