Why we do what we do
The 2020s create a new reality for business, where issues like the climate emergency, social inclusion, low-carbon economy, challenges to neoliberal capitalism and biodiversity loss are no longer peripheral, but central to how businesses and brands must plan for the future, transform their business models, embrace circularity, redefine their contract with society and engage employees, customers and investors.
These disruptive dynamics are the world’s biggest opportunity for long-term resilience and value-creation. Through all aspects of business: from sustainable products and services that help brands earn the trust and goodwill of society; to energising and attracting talent and exceeding investor expectations.
In short: this decade is a chance for all of us to radically alter the trajectory of climate change, vastly improve social justice and demonstrate that businesses and brands are a critical, positive part of a sustainable and just future.
How we work
We have always worked flexibly as a team, not just because of Covid, but because it’s what suits us and our clients. We work office hours, with some flexibility on timing, and have all-access passes to WeWork offices around the world, with the London Waterloo site as our day-to-day hub. When we’re not in the office, we work from home. Our clients are based all over the world: currently in Belgium, Netherlands, US, UK and France. We work flexibly, respectfully and enjoy a decent work-life balance.
Job basics
Full-time - 5 days/week
Salary: approx. £40,000 – £50,000
Location
We have a preference for London-based candidates, but we are open to applications from anywhere in Europe.
You will work mostly from the WeWork office in London Waterloo with the flexibility to work from home. From time-to-time, you may change your location during the year.
Face-to-face team meetings in London or elsewhere.
Occasional face-to-face client meetings - usually in London, Europe and US.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for an Impact Strategist to join our team to help us deliver work for clients and deepen our knowledge base.
The successful candidate will have a combination of expertise in strategy, communication and desk research. They’ll have excellent client management skills. They will be comfortable combining creative and analytical thinking.
We need you to be a self-starter, an innovative thinker, adept at bringing concepts and ideas off the page to ensure they land with immediacy and excitement.
You’ll be part of our growing team and we’ll expect you to chip in with ideas, get stuck into projects and be more than capable of managing your time, liaising with clients and working independently, efficiently and collaboratively.
You will be a quick learner, enthusiastic, detail-oriented and collaborative—ready to roll up your sleeves and join a team that’s helping to address the world’s most important challenges.
You are passionate about playing a role in creating a sustainable future. You are well versed in the diverse challenges humanity faces, but optimistic and energised about our ability to scale innovation and capture opportunity to make it happen.
We’re a small company with big ambitions. We’d like the successful candidate to be a part of our journey and believe in our mission. As such, we’re looking for someone who wants to build our research, insight and foresight ability, perhaps over time building a team.
What you will do in this role
Research, insight and foresight
Source relevant information and insights quickly and accurately using a wide variety of sources - including quantitative and qualitative research, online search, client materials, reports, other consultancies' work, expert interviews, etc.
Ability to work flexibly and efficiently, exercising a balance between research rigour and speed; we are looking for people who can maintain a high degree of rigour throughout, but who also experiment in their approach and methodology.
Make judgments about the quality and credibility of a source - you’ll know what experts and organisations give weight to facts and stats - you’ll cross check and clearly reference all your research.
Get to grips quickly with a variety of topic areas and specialisms: we have clients across many sectors, from insurance to fashion
You will need to quickly familiarise yourself with specialised topic areas within sustainability (e.g.; soil health, circular economy, transition to a zero carbon economy, human rights in supply chains) but we do not expect you to be an expert in these topics.
Analysis and synthesis
Strong analytical ability to understand and focus on what really matters in any given brief. You’ll know the difference between a really useful insight and contextual info.
Synthesise your findings and draw crystal clear conclusions - for example, this might include how to cluster companies, categorise different types of consumers, summarise key learnings, identify themes/tensions, etc.
Uncover ‘edge cases’ - e.g.; new entrants to a market, new technologies, innovative products and services, emerging consumer behaviour - and then identify and explain why this is relevant to the task at hand.
Ability to imagine and propose future ideas/scenarios - not simply report back on what you have found, but be able and eager to contribute to the development of our recommendations to clients.
Strategy and innovation
Work alongside clients and senior colleagues to develop ambitious sustainability and engagement strategies as well as innovation frameworks and platforms:
Contribute to strategy recommendations and strategic frameworks.
Contribute to the development of sustainable / circular innovation frameworks, platforms and pipelines.
Ensuring commitments are ambitious - always aiming for game-changing impact.
Linking sustainability and engagement strategies to corporate strategy, growth and value-creation.
Finding ways to make strategies as simple to understand and communicate as possible, without losing any impact.
Benchmark against and learn from competitors, out-of-sector leaders, etc.
Design and facilitate parts of workshops, alongside senior colleagues.
Create well-designed presentation decks that communicate, convince and excite.
Laser focus on how sustainability strategy can be activated across the business, e.g, internal and external comms, business model innovation, stakeholder communications, partnerships, etc.
Crafting the right words and frameworks that communicate the strategy or framework.
Look at ways to track and measure the impact of our work.
Presentations
Highly proficient with presentation creation - including; creating the overall narrative and ‘flow’, clear presentation structuring, summarizing, sources and annotations, as well a very high standard of presentation and layout.
Confident in presenting findings to clients and answering questions concisely and with authority.
Working with clients
Form strong and supportive relationships with clients.
Create project plans, most importantly, ensuring that the project plan is an effective management and communication tool.
Be responsible for growing the clients you’re working with - identify new ways we can help them.
Business development
Get involved in all aspects of business development to help grow Fortitude
Marketing and content creation - e.g.; blogs, thought leadership, campaign development, social media content etc…
Writing proposals - with senior support - for prospective clients and existing clients
Contributing to pitches - research, ideas, creating the deck, etc.
Technical skills
Totally proficient with Google Workspace Suite (Slides, Docs and Sheets) and Microsoft Office suite.
Excellent at organising online search, alerts, being on-top of when new information/research is published.
Totally proficient in using remote working tools - Google Drive, Teams/Zoom etc., Slack, Miro etc.
Qualifications & experience
Minimum of 3 years of client-facing strategy or consulting experience in an agency, consultancy or similar
